The story

How it came together

Pooja's family is from Almora and her husband Harsh's from Vadodara, and both mothers had clear, slightly different ideas of how a godh bharai should go. Pooja was in her seventh month, had been advised to avoid long periods of standing, and wanted something gentle: family only, at her parents' home in Dehradun, in the garden if the February weather allowed. The brief from her mother was simple — both traditions, with Pooja seated and comfortable throughout.

We spent an afternoon with both mothers writing down the sequence: the Kumaoni blessing and filling of the lap, the Gujarati simant rituals and the sukhdi prepared by Harsh's grandmother. Mid-February afternoons in Dehradun are warm in the sun and cold in the shade by four, so we placed seating along the sun's path, set a hard stop at 4:30 and kept shawls and a warm room ready indoors.

A floral jhoola was built fixed to its frame, so it looked like a swing but did not move, and Pooja sat on it with cushioned back support through fifty minutes of rituals. A coordinator hosted three short games that included the grandparents, and the menu brought together Almora's bal mithai and singori with dhokla and sukhdi.

Highlights

The moments that made it

  1. Kumaoni and Gujarati rituals sequenced together with both mothers
  2. A floral jhoola fixed to its frame — the look of a swing without the movement
  3. Garden seating arranged along the path of the winter sun
  4. Almora bal mithai and singori served alongside dhokla and sukhdi
  5. Rituals completed in fifty minutes, with a warm, quiet room ready indoors

“My mother and mother-in-law had never agreed on anything this quickly. I sat comfortably the whole afternoon, the sun stayed on us, and every elder got their moment. It felt like family, not like an event someone had organised.”
