A good offsite does something an office cannot: it takes people out of their routines long enough to think differently and actually talk to each other. Uttarakhand is well placed for this. Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Corbett and the Dehradun outskirts are all within a day's travel of Delhi NCR, and far enough from the city to feel like a genuine change. Here is how we plan hill offsites for teams of 20 to 300 people.
Start with the objective
Before we look at a single venue, we ask the HR or leadership team one question: what should be different when people get back to work? The answer shapes everything else.
- Strategy and planning: quiet venues, good meeting rooms, strong Wi-Fi and fewer activities. Mussoorie and the calmer Dehradun resorts suit this well.
- Team bonding: more time outdoors, shared challenges and relaxed evenings. Rishikesh (rafting, camping, riverside bonfires) and Corbett (safaris and nature walks) work beautifully.
- Celebration or reward: a strong gala night, good food, entertainment and some free time. Almost any destination works if the evening is planned properly.
- Leadership retreats: small groups, premium stays, facilitated sessions and privacy.
Choosing the destination and season
Travel time matters more for a two-day offsite than for a wedding. Every hour on the road is an hour taken from the agenda.
- Dehradun outskirts: the easiest access. Jolly Grant airport and Dehradun station are well connected to Delhi, and several resorts on the edge of the valley have halls for 100 to 300.
- Rishikesh: about an hour from Dehradun. Rafting generally runs from October to June and stops for the monsoon. Alcohol isn't served within the town, which some teams see as an advantage.
- Mussoorie: an hour to an hour and a half up from Dehradun. Cool in summer when the plains are unbearable; cold but beautiful in winter.
- Jim Corbett: five to six hours by road from Delhi. Larger resorts with lawns, pools and meeting rooms, and safaris for downtime.
The best months are October to November and February to April. May and June are popular because of the heat in the plains, so book early. We generally advise against July to September, when landslides can disrupt hill roads.
Planner's tip: never schedule a serious session straight after a long drive or a heavy lunch. Put the thinking work in the morning, the activities in the afternoon and the celebration at night.
A sample two-day agenda
For a 60-person sales team offsite near Rishikesh, a typical plan might look like this:
- Day 1, morning: depart Delhi at 6 am by coach, a breakfast stop on the way, and arrival by late morning for check-in and lunch.
- Day 1, afternoon: a leadership address and two focused workshop sessions, with tea on the lawn in between.
- Day 1, evening: a visit to the Ganga aarti, then a riverside dinner with a bonfire and live music.
- Day 2, morning: optional sunrise yoga, then rafting for those who want it and a nature walk for those who don't.
- Day 2, afternoon: a closing session to agree action points, quarterly awards and lunch, with departure by 3 pm to reach Delhi before it gets too late.
The logistics that make or break it
Most offsite complaints are about logistics, not content. These are the details we obsess over:
- Travel: group train bookings or coach movement from the office, with a clear manifest and one point of contact per coach.
- Rooming: twin-sharing versus single occupancy is a policy question, so confirm it with HR before anything is quoted. Senior leaders often need single rooms with meeting space nearby.
- AV and connectivity: test projectors, microphones and Wi-Fi a day ahead. Hill venues can have patchy mobile networks, so we carry a backup internet connection for important calls.
- Safety: certified operators for rafting and adventure activities, life jackets and proper briefings, a medical kit and a doctor on call, and emergency contacts for every participant.
- Food: a balance of local Garhwali dishes and familiar favourites, clear labelling for Jain, vegan and allergy needs, and a late-night snack on the gala night.
- Branding: subtle is better. Standees, lanyards and a stage backdrop are usually enough; too much branding makes an offsite feel like another workday.
Budgeting sensibly
Costs for a hill offsite usually split across accommodation and meals, travel, venue and AV, activities, and the gala evening. For a two-night offsite at a mid-range to premium resort, many companies budget somewhere between ₹15,000 and ₹35,000 per person, depending on the property, travel mode and activities. Setting a clear per-head figure at the start makes every later decision faster.
If your team is planning an offsite, retreat or annual meet in Uttarakhand, our corporate events team at Shrim Events can put together a draft agenda and budget for you. Share your headcount, dates and goals, and we will take it from there.
